Mystery is in the air! This month, I am focusing on “locked room mysteries”—those murder stories that are isolated to a single group of people. Anyone could be the victim, and anyone could be the murderer. Who was driven to madness? What’s their motive?
I love these kinds of whodunits because they are intriguing yet not completely taxing on the brain! As secrets unravel, your mind is constantly trying to figure out how it will end, and it’s usually a twist no one has seen coming.
Although my Lost Heritage Trilogy is not a locked room mystery, the suspense builds and the dangerous culprit behind the Rossi sister’s threats is revealed in my final book, The Catalan Key. I loved adding this element of surprise and drama to a romance series, and even I didn’t know how it would end until the words came through my fingertips.
This month, I’ll be asking my social media followers some questions about their favorite mysteries. Feel free to comment with your own thoughts and insights below!
1. Do you remember the first mystery you ever read?
Mine was The Kachina Doll Mystery from the Nancy Drew Series, and it sparked a love of Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins and Hardy Boys novels in my youth.
2. What is a favorite “locked room” mystery of yours?
I loved The Guest List by Lucy Foley…not only was the setting in Ireland (one of my favorite locations), but it kept me guessing the whole time, with a quite unexpected resolution.
3. Your mystery preference: murder, secrets, or simply suspenseful?
I don’t need a mystery to end with or be revolved around a murder. I really get into the deep, dark secrets behind whatever is surrounding the mystery. That’s what keeps me hooked.
4. Are there any particular mystery settings that intrigue you more?
I love the idea of deserted places where people can’t escape. It makes the story more intimate and creepy, and gives you the opportunity to really get to know the characters involved more when they are isolated like that.
What would your responses be? I always love to hear from my readers, whether it’s their insights or a great recommendation for more fabulous books to read! What’s a favorite of yours?
