Book of the Week: The Priory of the Orange Tree

The Priory of the Orange Tree, by Samantha Shannon

When I ordered this book, I was intrigued by its novel description. When I received it—I was overwhelmed to see the size of it. 800 pages. I thought to myself, there is no way I could get through something of that magnitude. Well, turns out, it was so incredibly engaging and intriguing that I could barely put it down, and zipped through it in less than a week.

Adventure, unconventional romance, mystery, fantasy—this book had it all.

Although the first few chapters left me scratching my head until I knew who the characters were and from where, once I understood their roles and storylines, I was invested in them all (well, except for a doctor who was a whiny ass lol). I absolutely adored the various female ingenues (Ead being my favorite) and the empowering messages they gave through their stories.

I loved the mystery behind the history of Sabran and her bloodline, the different values between the women of the Priory and of the other regions and the reveals intertwined with Tane the dragonrider. This was truly an epic story of women at their finest—triumph through failure and adversity.

A few male characters were also lovable, such as great brother and friend, Loth, and the priory ambassador, Chasser. The interconnections that were revealed and the plot surprises made this book an absolute wonder to read.

All those pages were daunting, but more than worth the long nights past my bedtime spent lost in that fantasy world of theirs.

I hope they make this into a movie! (Though like all other great novels, it may not be done justice!) I would certainly go see it!
