Book of the Week: The Final Gambit

The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

From the moment I read the first book in the series, The Inheritance Games, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see how it all ended. I quickly read through books one and two, but had to wait for the release of this final book in August. My thoughts?

A satisfying ending to a mind-boggling trilogy.

I loved the puzzles and the twists and turns and the unexpected surprises around every corner. So many potential villains—I was happy to see new characters introduced instead of revisiting just the old relationships. It added a cool complexity and level of understanding as to why Avery ended up as the heir. Wasn’t prepared for that answer!

There could have been so many alternatives as to different character connections, family trees, and reasons for why Tobias Hawthorne chose this random stranger to receive all of his money…and I will say that it was certainly unpredictable! I always enjoy being surprised in the book (even though I relentlessly try to spoil it myself by reading into the clues!)

And the final “game?” Brilliantly ties back to her history and roots, and I loved the drama behind it all.

Although I was rooting for the book to have a few different ending possibilities for other plot points (I won't spoil it by saying what I was hoping for!) I think there was a great underlying message in the way that it all turned out.

I was captivated from beginning to end, and I admire the intricately mischievous mind the author must have to be able to create and execute the mysterious puzzles and pieces behind the scenes. Absolutely enjoyed the concluding book.
