Book of the Week: Finlay Donovan is Killing It

Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

The author was killing it when she concepted this quirky part-mystery, part-comedy adventure. I could not get enough of this witty novel, which is a cross between a day in the life of a single mom’s life gone to hell and a murder mystery.

The main female characters, Finlay and Vero, were outrageously playful and out of their minds, which I absolutely loved about them.

Finlay is just your typical cheated-on single mom in the throes of divorce with the threats of an ex-husband and his mistress-turned-fiancée suing for full custody, because, well they can. She is trying to make her dreams of being a writer come true, but has to look at life differently if she wants to save her children from the clutches of her new nemesis.

But an unexpected opportunity arises that is not something she ever once considered to help herself establish financial security. In fact, she finds herself unwittingly in a mob situation with nowhere to turn—except to her babysitter-turned-roommate, who doesn’t exactly make the situation easier on her. Throw in an attraction to a sexy lawyer and a charming but persistent cop, and a really clumsy disguise and cover-up plan, and you’ve got the makings of lots of great plot points.

The story was a comedy of errors and horrors, but not in a cheap way—in a delightfully genius way.

This book also had just enough intrigue to keep you guessing until the end, and even then, a plot twist brings you to your knees wanting the next book to be out already. I cannot wait for it to come out to see what happens next. Absolute brilliance.
